“Bachelor ” Angel Food Cake from Frederick II A favorite pastime for my brother Frederick II and his wife was hosting and attending bridge parties, for which she would make homemade treats. When my brother was back on his own, he maintained the friendships the two had as a couple and decided he would make something himself for the bridge games, relying on a favorite of his from his bachelor days – Angel Food Cake. Courtesy of Betty Crocker mixes, the Angel Food Cake became anticipated and quite popular among his bridge buddies! He has since retired his baker’s cap so for this edition of “Mom’s Recipe Box”, I baked an Angel Food Cake…
Write-Up & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com Over the Labor Day Weekend I stumbled upon the 6th Annual Labor Day Car Show at the Saybrook Point Inn & Spa in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Having reported on many a car show in the Greater Hartford area, including my favorite – Wednesday night Cruise Nights at Bart’s Drive-In in Windsor – I was curious to see if I spotted any familiar vehicles. Admission was free as I strolled through the Old Saybrook event. Participants paid a $10 registration fee. As far as I could tell I had not seen these entries before. Classics, rods, antiques and a…
Write-up & Photo by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com Recently, a friend invited me to breakfast at the newly opened IHOP restaurant in Manchester, Connecticut. It replaced Applebee’s, which closed. I came away from the experience with mixed reviews. First the lighting here is very bright, I tend to prefer soft or low lighting. Secondly, even though there was plenty of space in the main dining room and none of the servers appeared to be overburdened in any section, the waitress went to seat us in the somewhat isolated section to the far left. When we said we would prefer the main dining area, the waitress was visibly perturbed. She seated us as close to that left section as possible which meant one of us –…

“By Request” White Chocolate Cheesecake from Donna The White Chocolate Cheescake is one that is very time consuming but the outcome is worth it. I make it for special occasions only, as a Christmas gift or when I host Bunko. In fact, one year I decided to get sophisticated and got a coffee flavored ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins and the ladies pitched a fit! They told me how much they looked forward to my cheesecake, and said it was the best they’d ever had. Needless to say that is what I make every time I host Bunko. It is kind of nice knowing that portion of the menu…
Write-Up by (UConn alum) Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com Thanks to Ted Kennedy, Jr. of Branford, Connecticut, the University of Connecticut’s connection to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has reached UConn’s top administrator. An alumnus of the UConn School of Law and candidate for state senate, after accepting the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge from his friend, news anchor Dennis House of WFSB, Kennedy in turn called out UConn President Susan Herbst. The challenges were reported on The Laurel, as well as, on social media where the charitable effort went viral in the United States earlier this year. Doused by the new “hungry-looking” Husky dog mascot, Herbst not only accepted the challenge but used her video of the deed as an opportunity to bring attention to…
Article & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com Oh no, don’t let the rain come down! Sporadic rain showers did not deter peach shortcake lovers from attending the 65th Annual Peach Festival held Friday night, August 22 in Manchester, Connecticut. Umbrellas in hand, festival-goers turned out anyway. The Peach Festival is hosted by the 8th Utilities District firefighters and ladies auxiliary as a fundraiser for the volunteer department. Tickets were $5. Organizers moved most of the long tables for family style seating inside the Fire Headquarters, where the event was held for the second year after being relocated from its previous home down the hill at the old firehouse. For many the festival is an end-of-summer tradition but was also enjoyed by…
“A Keene Idea” Texas Hash from Betty Jane When I graduated from Keene Teacher’s College in 1961 as a Home Economics teacher I received my first recipe book. It was a collection of favorite recipes from Home Ec teachers in every state! The very first recipe I selected to make in the book was TEXAS HASH. I was single then but had guests for dinner that night. All of my guests enjoyed it and I put a stamp of approval on that page. My guests liked it that night and my family still asks for it 53 years later. This recipe has survived the years and is easily adapted to current trends:…
Write-Up & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com Let the peach peeling begin! Each August the 8th Utilities District firefighters and the ladies auxiliary in Manchester, Connecticut put a call out to the community for volunteers to assist with peeling peaches for the annual peach festival. Now in its 65th year, the peach peeling heralds the upcoming festival that is both a fundraiser for the volunteer fire department and has become a traditional last hurrah gathering as summer comes to a close. Firefighters serve up those yummy peach shortcakes topped with hand sliced fresh peaches and Shady Glen whipped cream. Don’t be surprised to see politicians circulating at this event. The 2014 festival is scheduled for Friday, August 22 at the Fire Headquarters on 138…
Write-Up & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com When I began my reporting career one of my earliest assignments was to cover a church sponsored Thanksgiving Day dinner for the homeless and those down on their luck. That day I talked with people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, veterans working to recover from their wartime experiences, elderly folks barely making ends meet on fixed incomes, and a young, newly unemployed couple who had swallowed their pride to be there so their children would have a holiday meal. Since that time, over a span of more than two decades I have reported on the growing needs of local and regional food pantries in communities throughout the Greater Hartford, Connecticut area. Just this past spring I…
