Jack Bannan Turkey Trot Helps Foodshare Move Towards Thanksgiving Goal

The Jack Bannan Memorial Turkey Trot held November 18, in Connecticut’s Farmington Valley got off to a strong start collecting 1,231 turkeys to help Foodshare feed hungry folks in Greater Hartford for the Thanksgiving holiday, said organizers. People without enough to eat unlikely come to mind when thinking of Connecticut, long considered one of the wealthiest states in the nation. “A Turkey and Thirty” – Today & Thursday Help Foodshare Provide Thanksgiving Meals

Write-up & Photo by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com   Today and tomorrow, November 19 and 20, area food drives are being held to assist Bloomfield-based Foodshare in providing a Thanksgiving turkey dinner and the trimmings to those in need in the Greater Hartford, Connecticut area. “Foodshare received 19,896 requests for turkeys from hungry families this holiday season,” Gloria McAdam, Foodshare President and CEO announced in a press release. Foodshare’s “A Turkey and Thirty” campaign asks for a donation of $30 plus a turkey, and aims to also raise $900,000 to “continue feeding people year-round.” “What we want people to understand is that many of our neighbors continue to struggle the other 364 days of the year,” McAdam added. “While we feel strongly that every American…

That day I talked with people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, veterans working to recover from their wartime experiences, elderly folks barely making ends meet on fixed incomes, and a young, newly unemployed couple who had swallowed their pride to be there so their children would have a holiday meal. Washington Redskins & Former Windsor High Player Tackles Hunger in Greater Hartford

By Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb CONNECTICUT-Washington Redskins defensive end and former Windsor High School football player Chris Baker is tackling hunger in the Greater Hartford area. Baker was on hand earlier this week to present a donation to Bloomfield based-Foodshare from The Chris Baker Foundation. Baker’s foundation strives to foster education and literacy. According to a press release from Foodshare, Baker’s donation is expected to be the beginning of a continuing relationship with the food bank that serves the Greater Hartford region.
