Firefighters’ Host 65th Annual Peach Festival

Each August the 8th Utilities District firefighters and the ladies auxiliary in Manchester, Connecticut put a call out to the community for volunteers to assist with peeling peaches for the annual peach festival. Now in its 65th year, the peach peeling heralds the upcoming  festival that is both a fundraiser for the volunteer fire department and has become a traditional last hurrah gathering as summer comes to a close.  Firefighters serve up those yummy peach shortcakes topped with hand sliced fresh peaches and Shady Glen whipped cream. Write-Up & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb In its 64th year, the popularity of the Manchester, Connecticut 8th Utilities District Fire Department Peach Festival continued Friday night, August 23, as festival-goers turned out to enjoy their annual peach shortcake treat in a new location. Traditionally held across from the old firehouse on the corner of Main and Hilliard streets, this year the event was moved up the hill to the new firehouse which serves as the district’s headquarters.  It can be risky business to tamper with tradition and a successful tradition at that, but the move was said to be prompted by a desire to encourage the community to view the headquarters as the volunteer firefighter district prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary in…

              Write-Up & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett Things should be just peachy tonight in Manchester, Connecticut where the 63rd Annual Peach Festival is being held from 6-8 p.m. Put on by Eighth Utilities District Fire Department, this is a no frills, albeit popular hometown festival that revolves around tasty bowls of peach shortcake topped with whipped cream.  Lines usually start forming well before 6 p.m. and snarl along Main Street down the hill to the old fire station on the corner of Hilliard and Main, where the peachy treats are served to festival-goers.
