Restoration of Travelers Tower – Iconic New England Skyscraper

Posted on April 29, 2014

Write-Up & Photo by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb Once the tallest building in New England, the Travelers Tower continues to dominant the skyline of Hartford, Connecticut. These days, however, what catches one’s eye is elaborate scaffolding that ensconses the tower, the subject of a $30 million restoration project. Designed by Donn Barber, the thirty-four story, 230,000 square foot neoclassical style skyscraper was built in 1907, as noted by on-line architectural sources. Its crowning glory wasn’t added until more than a decade later, a 527  foot tower featuring a pyramid-like roof, complete with a cupola where a beacon is reportedly housed. Finished in 1919, the addition earned Travelers Tower bragging rights at the time as New England’s tallest building and the seventh tallest building worldwide. Today…

A Grand 2014 St. Patrick’s Parade for Greater Hartford, Connecticut

Posted on March 16, 2014

Story & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb   It was another grand St. Patrick’s Parade that drew an estimated 60,000 spectators to downtown Hartford, Connecticut Saturday, March 15 to watch five thousand marchers.   This year’s Grand Marshal was Beverly Concannon, a longtime volunteer for the Irish American Home Society.     Early morning clouds gave way to sunshine by the 11:00 a.m. onset of the parade.   Irish folk music filled the air, as well as, the sounds of “Danny Boy” performed by various high school marching bands.   As is tradition the Hartford Police Department led off the parade followed by the Hartford Fire Department Emerald Society.   Of course, there were bagpipers in kilts and a sea of green revelers who…

Christmas and G. Fox & Co.

Posted on December 24, 2013

By: Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com    When I was growing up, G.Fox & Co. in downtown Hartford, Connecticut played a big part in Christmas for my family. In America’s golden era of thriving downtown department stores, G. Fox & Co, a.k.a. “Fox’s”, was known as “Connecticut’s Department Store.”   Christmas shopping at “Fox’s” would get underway for us the day after Thanksgiving. It continued each weekend until the arrival of the holiday. My father worked in the city so the family rode into Hartford with him. We spent the day shopping then met him after he got off work. Often we had dinner downtown.   “Fox’s” was a magical destination at this time of year. My mother made sure we were dressed-up for these excursions.…

Luck of the Irish Shines on Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2013 – Newtown Victims Honored

Posted on March 10, 2013

Story & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com The Luck of the Irish clearly shone on the 2013 Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade held Saturday March 9, under sunny skies with temperatures approaching 50 degrees. Just a day before 20 inches of snow fell on the area. Nonetheless, the capital city’s streets and sidewalks were cleared to the bone to accommodate the tens of thousands of spectators who turned out for one of its most popular events. Naturally, green was the color of the day! Green and white ribbons were also worn by some 300 parade units in honor of the 20 first graders and six educators killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown three months ago. Sandy Hook first responders took part and…

Hartford Veterans Parade Held On Consummate New England November Day

Posted on November 5, 2012

Article & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb The 2012 Veterans Parade in Hartford, Connecticut was held Sunday, November 4. It was a consummate November day in New England characterized by sunny skies, crisp, cool air and some colorful leaves still clinging to the trees. The perfect autumn weather was in marked contrast to the high winds and rain brought by Hurricane Sandy a week earlier that devastated areas along the Connecticut shoreline, as well as, parts of New York City and the New Jersey shore. Although there was a solid turnout for the parade, it did not appear to have been as large as in past years – possibly a consequence of the recent weather event that left thousands of residents without electrical power…

Jersey Boys Rocks in Hartford, CT

Posted on October 28, 2011

Jersey Boys Rocks in Hartford, CT Article and photo by Jacqueline Bennett It is easy to understand why Jersey Boys won the 2006 Tony Award for best musical. A documentary style musical about the 1960s rock n’ roll group Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, the show has been rocking the house in its return engagement at The Bushnell in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. Last Saturday’s matinee performance was no exception. From the moment the players stepped on stage until they took their final bow the audience was fully engaged with the story and music, offering prolonged applause after several songs to clearly appreciative cast members who remained in character, yet acknowledged the response with a touch of a hand to their hearts. From “Sherry” to…
