Mom’s Recipe Box: Pumpkin Whoopie Pies & “Of Course” Chocolate Chip Cookies from Jackie

Posted on October 3, 2014

Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pies & “Of Course” Chocolate Chip Cookies from Jackie To make redundancy redundant, autumn is my favorite season and I adore the beauty of October in New England. With that in mind, I am pleased to share my contribution for the “Mom’s Recipe Box” family project this month. I wanted to add not only the tried and true but something fun and new. What could be more fun than making whoopee (?) – oops, that’s whoopie, as in Whoopie Pies. It was during a visit to Belltown Hill Orchards in South Glastonbury, Connecticut two years ago that I first spotted Pumpkin Whoopie Pies in their bake shop. The idea…

Posted on September 26, 2014

“Maryann’s Mixology” I love the Summer, but the Fall Season has so much to offer too. I like the colorful leaves; jeans and a sweatshirt; orange pumpkins and yellow mums; picking apples and drinking fall beers/ciders! Nana loved the Big E. Last weekend I went to the Big E and sampled some ciders/beers. Yummmmm, I had to try and recreate my unforgettable experience with one particular beer. – Maryann Larned             INGREDIENTS  2 bottles of Woodchuck Fall Beer; one eighth cup of Comte’s Pure Maple Syrup (Grade B); one half t sugar; one half t cinnamon; one half t pumpkin pie spice        …

Mom’s Recipe Box: “Wonderful Memories” Chicken Enchiladas from Donna

Posted on September 19, 2014

“Wonderful Memories” Chicken Enchiladas from Donna   I came across the chicken enchilada recipe when I was a waitress at Sizzler. There was a wonderful family named The Wachters that would come in and sit in my section often. They gave me such a warm family feeling, which was nice, because my family was all spread out in different states. They had me over for my birthday one year and served me the chicken enchiladas. They are on the gourmet side when it comes to enchiladas, but they are awesome! I will always cherish the wonderful memories I shared with the Wachter family. My son Tommy is in town, on leave from the Marines, and…

Mom’s Recipe Box: “Bachelor” Angel Food Cake from Frederick II

Posted on September 5, 2014

“Bachelor ” Angel Food Cake from Frederick II   A favorite pastime for my brother Frederick II and his wife was hosting and attending bridge parties, for which she would make homemade treats.   When my brother was back on his own, he maintained the friendships the two had as a couple and decided he would make something himself  for the bridge games, relying on a favorite of his from his bachelor days – Angel Food Cake.  Courtesy of Betty Crocker mixes, the Angel Food Cake became anticipated and quite popular among his bridge buddies!   He has since retired his baker’s cap so for this edition of “Mom’s Recipe Box”, I baked an Angel Food Cake…

Mom’s Recipe Box: “By Request” White Chocolate Cheesecake from Donna

Posted on August 29, 2014

“By Request” White Chocolate Cheesecake from Donna   The White Chocolate Cheescake is one that is very time consuming but the outcome is worth it. I make it for special occasions only, as a Christmas gift or when I host Bunko.   In fact, one year I decided to get sophisticated and got a coffee flavored ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins and the ladies pitched a fit! They told me how much they looked forward to my cheesecake, and said it was the best they’d ever had. Needless to say that is what I make every time I host Bunko. It is kind of nice knowing that portion of the menu…

Mom’s Recipe Box: “A Keene Idea” Texas Hash from Betty Jane

Posted on August 22, 2014

“A Keene Idea” Texas Hash from Betty Jane   When I graduated from Keene Teacher’s College in 1961 as a Home Economics teacher I received my first recipe book. It was a collection of favorite recipes from Home Ec teachers in every state! The very first recipe I selected to make in the book was TEXAS HASH. I was single then but had guests for dinner that night. All of my guests enjoyed it and I put a stamp of approval on that page. My guests liked it that night and my family still asks for it 53 years later. This recipe has survived the years and is easily adapted to current trends:…

Mom’s Recipe Box: “Nana Nunu” Date Nut Bread from Debbie

Posted on August 8, 2014

“Nana Nunu” Date Nut Bread from Debbie It is only fitting, that my recipe for “Mom’s Recipe Box”, be a recipe in honor of my “Nana Nunu”. Words alone cannot convey, the love and gratitude, I have for my grandmother. My grandmother loved and raised me as if I was her own. The love of family was her mission, her credo and the fabric of her being. I have many fond memories of family gatherings, that included signature favorites and a venue for new and exciting dishes. A very special memory, is one where Nana and I would have a cup of tea together. We would sit in the red and white kitchen of 128,…

Mom’s Recipe Box: Candy from Candy

Posted on August 1, 2014

(Candy from Candy) Marshmallow Fudge I watched my mother make this recipe when I was quite young. Then little by little she let me help, until the first time I made it myself and I was so proud and happy. My mother noted on the recipe card that it was originally tested by one of her best friends – Evelyn Wallen. Then Mom tested it herself. The Marshmallow Fudge is sweet – just like the memories of cooking in the kitchen with Mom. – Candy Bennett       INGREDIENTS 3 cups sugar; three fourths cup milk; 2 teaspoons cornstarch; 1 teaspoon vanilla; pinch of salt; 1 tablespoon butter; one half cup cocoa; one half…
