Sugar Meister Makes Maple Magic at Northwest Park in Windsor, Connecticut

Article & Photos by By:Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb For twenty-seven years the Sugar Meister of Northwest Park, a.k.a. Chuck Drake, has been making maple magic in Windsor, Connecticut. Working as a volunteer, Drake has overseen growth of the park’s maple sugaring program from seven up to 210 tree taps. Using a wood-fired evaporator, within a five week period the program hand produces between forty to sixty gallons of pure maple syrup annually and hosts demonstrations of the process each weekend from mid-February to mid-March. A March 23 Friends of Northwest Park Pancake Breakfast will culminate the yearly maple sugaring ritual where as many as 600 breakfasts are expected to be served at the park. “The key is always making sure you have liquid in the…

Article & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb Much to the delight of spectators, the annual Torchlight Parade featuring emergency vehicles adorned with colorful lights and decorations helped usher in the holiday season December 8 in Windsor, Connecticut. Following a Carol Sing on the Windsor Town Hall portico, the Torchlight Parade made its way through historic Windsor Center. “The cooperation among everyone that volunteers is great. It’s a nice family event,” said Windsor Firefighter Tom Dillon of the Wilson Company, who has organized each Torchlight Parade over the past ten years, including the town’s inaugural one.                   Initially, explained Dillon, the carol sings and torchlight parades were held on separate nights. Surpassing a goal of seven hundred set by the event planning committee, a preliminary tally showed 742 runners and walkers had signed on by the close of registration at noontime Sunday. “We have a great turnout,” said Mike Deneen, a runner and part owner of the Union Street Tavern that hosted the 3.5 mile road race. Spirits were high for the race that is also a fundraiser for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a non-profit organization which raises money to fight pediatric cancer. Community Rallies to Make Inaugural “Golf Aid” Tournament a Success for Alex’s Lemonade

Article & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com  Resulting in a tremendous turnout, relatives, friends and community members rallied around organizers of the inaugural “Golf Aid” Golf  Tournament held September 9, at Tower Ridge in Simsbury, Connecticut.  The event benefited Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a non-profit organization formed to raise awareness and funds to fight childhood cancer. Hampered early on by slow registration and a family crisis, the tournament was nearly scrapped. But by Sunday’s 1:30 p.m. shotgun start, the golfing roster was full. “We have 110 golfers,” said a beaming Sue Bowman, a Windsor, Conn. police officer and the event’s primary organizer. “I said to Sue, ‘no, even if it is just four of us, do not cancel it. This year’s “parade & muster” was a tribute to the memory of Dillon, whose life was lost after his motorcycle was hit by a car this past February. “Carrying his espontoon and marching as the color guard commander, Fran was always found at the front of the Windsor Corps leading them down the street,” – these emotional words were spoken during a ceremony on the Windsor Town Green. Windsor Connecticut Police K-9 Team Wins First Place in Team Division at USPCA Competition

by: Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com Officer Steve Vesco and his K-9 partner, Iko, brought a 1st place trophy and medallion home to the Windsor, Connecticut police department.  The K-9 team won the award at the 2012 United States Police Canine Association Region #4 K9 Field Trials. “He did well,” Vesco said of Iko during a June 27 interview at the Public Safety Complex in Windsor. Iko is a 4-year-old solid black, male, German Shephard. The USPCA event was held June 23-24 in Middleton, Massachusetts. With temperatures in the 90s on day one, some of the canines could not handle the heat and four teams dropped out, leaving a field of 26 competing teams. Story & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb A little after 11:00 a.m. this morning Robert and Stephen McKay pitched the first tent on the town green in Windsor, Connecticut in preparation for the 2012 Shad Derby Day Parade & Festival on the Green scheduled for Saturday, May 19. The father and son, both Masons, were putting up the tent that will house CHIPS, a child safety identification program sponsored by Masonic Lodge #70. On the southern end of the green, orange fencing had been erected and picnic tables set up inside what will be the Beer Garden. Plans are underway for the sixth running of the 3.5 mile race through the historic center of Connecticut’s first town. Hosted by Union Street Tavern, the Tavern Trot is USATF certified and is a qualifier for the Manchester Road Race. Proceeds from the event will benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a national charity for research to fight childhood cancer. The planning committee held its initial meeting Tuesday night, May 2, at the tavern which is located on 20 Union Street in Windsor Center. “Last year we raised $20,000 and overall have donated $60,000,” noted planning committee member Paul Murray.…
