Teach Your Children Well – Sweet Sofia

So, it is with great joy that I am writing about my niece, sweet Sofia. As part of a school project to help someone in need Sofia chose The Ronald McDonald House in the Seattle, Washington area. Her dad Daniel distributed flyers to the Mercer Island Rotary and their Dojo, where the two take karate lessons. This past weekend they raised $400 worth of  “wish list and household items” which Sofia donated.  And on Sunday, Sofia ran the Mercer Island Rotary Kid’s Dash and Dan ran the 5K, both to benefit families dealing with cancer.      …

She was one of the original volunteers for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and has been instrumental in raising thousands of dollars for the foundation towards research to fight pediatric cancer. She has been a volunteer at Mary’s Place in Windsor, Connecticut – A Center for Grieving Children, has participated in a program to help youngsters at the local schools learn courtesy and manners, for some eleven years she has coordinated a care package program for the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan called “Send Hometown Windsor to the Troops”, was instrumental too in advancing plans for the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial, and…

Tavern Trot Raises More Than $100,000 For Pediatric Cancer Research

Hosted by the Union Street Tavern in historic Windsor, Connecticut on Sunday, September 15, the 3.5 mile trail and road race benefited Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. A special participant was the grandfather of the little girl who started the foundation – he took part just two months after receiving a lung transplant. “This $100,000 is enough to pay for a year of a research project,” said Jason “Jay” Scott, the father of little Alexandra “Alex” Scott who started Alex’s Lemonade Stand outside her Connecticut home to help other children fighting the disease before she lost her…

Article & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com On yet another glorious weather day gracing the region, the 6th Annual Tavern Trot held September 16 in historic Windsor, Connecticut, drew a record number of participants. Surpassing a goal of seven hundred set by the event planning committee, a preliminary tally showed 742 runners and walkers had signed on by the close of registration at noontime Sunday. “We have a great turnout,” said Mike Deneen, a runner and part owner of the Union Street Tavern that hosted the 3.5 mile road race. Community Rallies to Make Inaugural “Golf Aid” Tournament a Success for Alex’s Lemonade

Article & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com  Resulting in a tremendous turnout, relatives, friends and community members rallied around organizers of the inaugural “Golf Aid” Golf  Tournament held September 9, at Tower Ridge in Simsbury, Connecticut.  The event benefited Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a non-profit organization formed to raise awareness and funds to fight childhood cancer. Hampered early on by slow registration and a family crisis, the tournament was nearly scrapped. But by Sunday’s 1:30 p.m. shotgun start, the golfing roster was full. “We have 110 golfers,” said a beaming Sue Bowman, a Windsor, Conn. police officer and the event’s primary organizer. “I said to Sue, ‘no, even if it is just four of us, do not cancel it.
