Upon opening my daily e-mail from National Day Calendar this morning I was pleasantly reminded of the concurrent celebrations.   At an early age I learned the joy of reading. My parents and my sister read to me from the time I can remember. Holding a book in my hands became as natural to me as breathing, and soon enough I was reading to myself. Shady Glen Carolers – A Holiday Tradition

Article & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com   Since my childhood, not a Christmas season has passed without anticipation of seeing and hearing the carolers perched atop the roof of Shady Glen, a sandwich and ice cream shop in Manchester, Connecticut. In an ever changing world this holiday tradition has been a joyful constant.   Shady Glen Dairy Stores include two shops both in Manchester. The original store is located along the Routes 6 & 44 corridor, which connects Hartford County with the state’s “Quiet Corner”.  Shady Glen is well-known as a Nutmeg State treasure and “local institution”. Manchester Parkade on West Middle Turnpike Buoyed by Fitness Center

                              Article & Photos by Jacqueline Bennett newsandviewsjb.com Although the older, blighted Broad Street Parkade in Manchester, Connecticut is slated for demolition, the West Middle Turnpike portion of Manchester Parkade is open for business, buoyed by the addition of a fitness center. Since the arrival of Cardio Express, which took over an empty storefront, more and more cars fill the lot on the west end of the shopping strip daily. Anchoring the eastern end is busy Stop & Shop Supermarket. An approximate half mile walk from one end of the shopping strip to the other, it is a good mini workout unto itself.
